Gartner: CMOs Spend 15.3% on AI, But Only 30% Ready to Scale

Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey reveals a stark readiness gap: CMOs are allocating 15.3% of marketing budgets to AI, but 70% say their internal processes aren't mature enough to implement and scale it effectively. Meanwhile, consumption-based martech is spreading — and half of adopters are constantly renegotiating contracts to avoid surprise AI bills.

96% of B2B Marketers Use AI, But Hiring Is Shifting to Judgment and QA

AI adoption is now table stakes — Demand Gen Report pegs it at 96%, HubSpot says 80% use AI for content creation. But the AMA's 2026 State of Marketing Careers Report signals where the work is moving: upward, toward roles requiring judgment, strategy, and quality control. The implication? AI spend is becoming a governance problem before it's a creative one.

Salesloft: 100% Use AI, Only 20.6% Show Measurable Results

Every revenue leader in Salesloft's 2026 benchmark says AI is in the revenue process. Only one in five can prove it's "production-ready" with measurable outcomes. The real bottleneck? CRM hygiene. 37.6% cite updating CRM records as the top administrative bottleneck, and 55.6% say the data entered is mostly subjective seller reporting. AI Visibility Varies 2:1 Between Engines — No Standard Exists

Treyci's research on B2B software shows brand mentions in AI answers vary from 81% on one engine to 43% on another — same prompts, same month. Four vendors released "AI visibility" tools in the past week, each measuring something different. The uncomfortable truth: GEO has no shared unit of measurement yet, and reporting one engine's results to a board tells an incomplete story.

ChatGPT Sponsored Ads Rose from 6% to 24% in 3 Months

Comscore's AI Intelligence data shows sponsored ad presence in ChatGPT hotel prompts jumped from 6% in March to 24% in May 2026. If that trajectory holds, the "organic AI visibility" surface vendors are selling access to is rapidly filling with paid placements. Conversational advertising may become a direct competitor to the GEO programs companies just started buying.

💡 My Take

The theme today: Everyone has AI. Almost no one can prove it works. The Salesloft finding — 100% adoption, 20.6% measurable results — is the headline. But the Gartner spending data tells you why: organizations are funding tools faster than they're fixing data, processes, and governance. For leaders, this is the gap to close. The winners won't be the ones with the most AI tools. They'll be the ones who can actually show what the tools did.
